Some clients may access counseling services through an EAP - Employee Assistance Program, which may be offered as a benefit where the client works. EAP counseling is usually defined as "short - term, focused, problem solving help". EAP benefits are not a substitute for health insurance and EAP counseling is not meant as a substitute for mental health treatment for major clinical disorders. EAP benefit information is usually found in employee handbooks or at a Human Resources department at the work - place. EAP benefits, when utilized, are typically used before a client accesses his/her health insurance. All EAP sessions are pre-authorized. This means you must obtain a "preauthorization number" from your EAP before you call for an appointment. Sometimes EAP sessions may be required by an employer as a condition of continued employment. The usual client confidentiality is assured for voluntary EAP sessions. For involuntary EAP sessions the client signs a special EAP Release of Information form, so I am able to communicate with the EAP case manager about the client assessment, progress, and recommendations.
